Defaults Are Decisions

There is a quiet category of choices in payment infrastructure that the industry tends to describe as implementation details. We do not accept that framing.

There is a quiet category of choices in payment infrastructure that the industry tends to describe as implementation details. Cut-off windows. Retry behavior. Currency selection when a corridor offers more than one. The order in which a batch is released. The fee path on a cross-border transfer.

Each of these is presented as a technical default. In practice, each is a decision made on the customer's behalf every day.

We do not accept that framing.

A default is not a detail. It is a choice the platform makes when the customer is silent. Inside a regulated business, silence is rarely consent. The choice has consequences for cost, for timing, for liquidity, for which counterparty receives the funds first. Those consequences accumulate.

We try to do three things every time we touch a default.

We surface it. The setting is visible in the operator console, written in the language of the choice it makes, not the language of the engine that executes it.

We explain it. There is a reason the platform chose this particular default, and the reason is articulated where the customer can read it.

We let the customer override it. Sometimes our default is right for 90% of operators and wrong for 10%. The ten should be able to choose differently without writing a ticket.

There is a deeper principle underneath. A regulated payment institution cannot hide behind its defaults. Every choice the platform makes is a choice the customer is downstream of, and the customer has the right to know which choices we made and why.

A platform that surfaces its own choices is harder to build than one that hides them inside neutral defaults. We think it is a trade worth making.

That is the principle we try to honor every time we ship.
